The Diversity Ally Certificate program began in the fall of 2011 as part of the Diversity Development Institute, an initiative recommended by the Provost’s Task Force on Race and the Institution. The certificate encourages faculty, staff, and administrators to engage in dialogue that expands their diversity competencies and their comfort level in holding diversity-related conversations in a safe and welcoming environment.

We want to thank the graduates and their supervisors for their support of the program. In our first year, we offered 18 courses with 522 participants. Our graduates completed 26 hours of diversity-specific courses. We understand how precious time is and the fact that these individuals have been able to step away from their offices for that amount of time is greatly appreciated.

Vision

The Diversity Development Institute enhances university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts that contribute to the core mission of Virginia Tech. It provides opportunities to develop competencies by engaging faculty and staff in rich dialogue that fosters a more inclusive environment. The Institute offers educational sessions and interactive workshops that inspire the campus community to increase awareness on all topics of diversity and inclusion.

Goal

The Diversity Development Institute assists with incorporating inclusion efforts into university messaging, events , and activities by providing a collaborative approach to enhancing institutional knowledge and reflecting the spirit of the Principles of Community and the Diversity Strategic Plan.

We aspire to:

  • Engage our faculty, staff, and administrators in campus-wide diversity and inclusion conversations

  • Develop our individual aptitude and knowledge to cultivate an environment of mutual respect and appreciation

  • Provide professional development opportunities to appreciate differing perspectives

  • Shift the institutional culture to further embrace our differences and similarities and foster a more inclusive campus community
