Despite their family's financial difficulties, Reco Charity's mother encouraged him to work hard and do well in school in the hopes that he would one day attend a university. As one of the first recipients of financial aid from the university's Presidential Scholarship Initiative, he received a full ride to Virginia Tech and will be first in his family to graduate from college.

Watch Alyssia Sims, winner of the 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. oratorical contest, as she performed during the January 2013 community brunch at Virginia Tech. The Annual MLK Poster, Essay and Oratorical contests are sponsored by the Office for Diversity and Inclusion in partnership with the Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County branch of the NAACP. Ms. Sims is a high school senior and will enter college in the fall. She wants to study communications.
